Using DynSite with DtDNS
DynSite is one of the many automated update
client applications that are available. DynSite supports more than 80 DNS providers in addition
to DtDNS. DynSite is written by Noël Danjou and can
be downloaded from his web site. DynSite is
shareware and must be purchased after a trial period. Registration is $15.00 USD and can be handled
online.
We chose to write a tutorial on using DynSite with DtDNS because it is one of the most widely
used update clients, and can be a little confusing for new users to configure. Since it supports
so many DNS services, there are many options available that do not apply to DtDNS. There are a
few options that are often ignored that will improve your experience with DtDNS.
Step 1: Launching Setup
Once DynSite is running, it will sit in the system tray, near the clock on the lower right side
of the screen. Right-click the DynSite icon to display the menu. Choose the "Setup" option to
access the configuration window.

Step 2: Configure the Service
Once the Setup window is open, select the "Services" tab if it is not already selected.
Scroll down the service listing under "Dynamic DNS Services" and select "DtDNS" from the list.
Click the "Add" button to launch the "Account Properties" window.
Step 3: Add Your Account
Enter the display name of this account. This is how the account will be identified within
DynSite.
Enter the username just as you would on the DtDNS login page.
Make sure the "requires a password" checkbox is checked.
Enter the password just as you would on the DtDNS login page.
Click OK to save the account entry.
You should now be returned to the main Setup screen.
Step 4: Add Your Host or Domain
From the Setup window, select the account you just added and click the "add" button to
launch the "Host or Domain Properties" screen.
Enter the display name of this host or domain. This is how the account will be identified
within DynSite.
Select the domain name that your hostname is a part of. If you are configuring your own
domain name, select "Your own domain" from the list and enter it in the text box.
If you are configuring a hostname, enter the actual hostname.
If you plan on going offline, check the "offline" box.
If you checked the "offline" box, enter the IP address 0.0.0.0 so our system will
apply your offline settings when you go offline.
Click OK to save the host or domain entry.
You should now be returned to the main Setup screen.
Step 5: Update Settings
Ensure that the "force update" box is checked. Select a the number of days to lapse
before an update will be forced. This is especially important for dynamic hostnames, which
are subject to an update timeout period. Between 10 and 25 days should be entered here.
Click OK to save the Update settings and close the DynSite Setup window.
